Electro-Harmonix Double Muff Overdrive/Fuzz Pedal Review
- Amazon: EHX Double Muff OD/Fuzz
- Pros: Two great FX one box.
- Cons: Changing the battery is a hassle. It would also be better if you could switch modes with your foot.
- Overall: This is a very versatile pedal with a great sound at a low price.
The EHX Double Muff is an easy-to-use overdrive/fuzz pedal that gives you two classic ’69 plug-in Muff Fuzz effects in one box. For controls, it has two knobs marked as Muff 1 and Muff 2, a fingerswitch to toggle between the single and double modes, and a footswitch. In single mode, the Muff 1 knob controls both volume and overdrive. In double mode, the Muff 2 knob has a leading role while the Muff 1 knob controls the volume. It features true bypass and has a sturdy metal housing, making it great to take on the road.
Despite its simplicity, the Double Muff produces a full and generous sound. In either of the two modes, there are multitudes of sounds you can achieve with a few adjustments. In single mode, only the Muff 1 knob operates and the overdrive can be weak or strong, based on how you want to spice up the sound. With these adjustments, it is possible to achieve a crunchy, slight overdrive or nice warm distortion effect. In double mode, the Muff 1 knob controls output and the Muff 2 knob controls distortion. By turning the latter clockwise, you can creates a brutally driven sound – really fat and gritty fuzz.
Looking at the history of the fuzz pedal sound, from Jimmy Hendrix style blues, to the grunge scene (e.g., Mudhoney and Nirvana), all the way to Jack White and bands like The Dead Weather and The Black Angels, you can grasp the breadth of the Double Muff’s sonic potential. It’s really a terrific pedal, and the sound it creates is warm and creamy.
Although you could use the Double Muff with any amp, if you want to use it to its full potential, I would recommend a tube amplifier. Furthermore, if you use a pedalboard, place the Double Muff first in the chain to produce the best results. What I particularly like about this pedal is the possibility of producing a vintage style sound, which actually agrees with its sophisticated retro design.
The alkaline battery life is extremely long, and can last for months. Keep in mind, however, thatiIf your battery goes dead in the middle of a concert, and an AC adapter is not at hand, you’ll need a screwdriver handy to undo the rear battery compartment. Another thing I don’t really like is the Double Muff’s finger switch for single/double mode; a distinct foot switch would really make things easier.
All in all, Electro-Harmonix makes great sounding pedals and the Double Muff is no exception. At a fair price, you will acquire not only an overdrive pedal, but also a high-quality fuzz. Double your pleasure with the double muff!
