The Fulltone Full-Drive 2 MOSFET is an amazingly versatile overdrive and boost pedal. It is housed in a double-wide enclosure, but easily sports enough features to justify its greedy use of real estate. At its core, it is a beautiful Tube Screamer style distortion circuit with more extra features built on top of it than you can shake a stick at.
The Full-Drive 2 MOSFET takes some time to get used to. There are a lot of buttons, knobs, and switches, and some of them can change their function based on the settings of others. The manual is helpful and succinct, and usable tones are easy to find after a little study and experimentation. Simply put, the FullDrive2-Mosfet features three gain stages. Two of them are always accessible when the pedal is engaged, and the third is additionally available with a second foot switch. Depending on the position of the Standard-Mosfet switch, this “Boost” stage can add either clean or dirty gain to the signal. The FullDrive2-Mosfet can also be configured so that all three of its gain stages provide clean boost, allowing guitarists the ability to really slam the front end of their amp if they so desire.
The distortion on the Full-Drive 2 MOSFET sounds like a very smooth souped-up Tube Screamer. There is an option to make the mid boost less pronounced, as well as a very expressive tone control. These features, coupled with the wide range of boost/dirt configurations available, make it possible to get most any overdrive tone you might want. I found it roughly as easy to use as two or three Tube Screamers in a chain, and the clean boost settings offered tonal options not available from unmodified Tube Screamers.
The construction of the Full-Drive 2 MOSFET strikes a good balance between expediency and durability. Only the switches are physically separated from the circuit board, but all the components are of high quality. The attractive powder coated chassis is sturdy and relatively lightweight. This pedal sounds great and is built to last.
