The Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer has been an extremely popular dirt pedal for many years. For many guitarists it finds just the right balance between price and build quality, while providing pleasing overdriven tones that are easy to dial in. Many makers offer pedals that copy or expand upon the TS9’s circuit, but few can match the economy of scale available from Ibanez.

The TS9 features simple controls for drive, level, and tone. It is important to choose a setting at an appropriate volume, as the TS9 does compress the signal somewhat. This compression becomes more pronounced at higher drive levels, and is less of a concern when using the pedal for light overdrive. I find that this pedal is most useful for emulating the sound of a tube amp just beginning to break up. The TS9 is great at producing subtle overdrive, but can also very ably provide more pronounced tube-style distortion if it is the only distortion pedal in your rig. The quality of the TS9’s distortion is bitey with a pronounced mid boost, without being harsh. No one would recommend it as a fuzz or a heavy distortion. The TS9 is an overdrive pedal, a very good overdrive pedal.

There are some benefits to the TS9 not directly related to its tone and build quality as well. Due to its popularity, it is easy to find modifications to improve on the TS9’s circuit. Also, it is an easy pedal to resell, though its used price is quite a bit lower than its new price (except for some vintage models). An ideal use for the TS9 is in a chain of subtle distortion boxes that can add up to a heavily distorted sound when all of them are engaged.

As with all of the 9 series Ibanez pedals, the TS9 Tube Screamer is housed in a very rugged and attractive chassis. The foot switch is durable, as are all the major external components, excepting the battery cover. The battery cover is convenient to access, but it is made of plastic and is liable to break after extended use. This is of minor concern to users of external power supplies, but a damaged battery cover does adversely affect appearance and resale value.
