  • Overall: This is an awesome fuzz pedal built with techniques and materials simply not available from more inexpensive stompboxes.

Full Review

The Keeley Fuzz Head is a Fuzz Face style distortion pedal housed in a small red enclosure. Some impressive tones can be coaxed out of the Fuzz Head using its simple array of enigmatically named controls. The two major external knobs, labeled “Fuzz” and “Head,” are dirty and clean gain controls, respectively. There is also a miniature switch that toggles silicon diodes in and out of the circuit.

With the fuzz knob turned low the Keeley Fuzz Head sounds like a severe overdrive pedal. This lighter flavor of distortion is very usable. At higher fuzz levels the Fuzz Head screams with heavy distortion and sustain. The difference made by toggling on and off the silicon diodes become more pronounced at more extreme distortion settings. The diodes smooth and compress the distortion somewhat, and can attenuate volume when the fuzz and head knobs are turned up. I was impressed at the presence of the Fuzz Head’s tone. Though it could put out very saturated, wide-spectrum fuzz, the Fuzz Head always maintained a crisp and well defined high end. I did not find myself wishing that there was a tone knob. An internal tone pot is included in the circuit, but it is a little hard to get at.

The Keeley Fuzz Head is an expensive fuzz pedal, but it features some of the highest quality construction available in a stompbox. The chassis and external components are rugged, and none of them are soldered directly to the spacious and well-labled circuit board. The size of the internal components indicates that they are rated for much higher wattages than they will ever receive. In addition to the internal tone control, there is in internal trim pot that controls the overall severity of the fuzz control. Keely even includes an array of replacement capacitors that can easily be swapped out to alter the Fuzz Head’s bass response. In terms of build quality, this is one of the best pedals money can buy.
